THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT [2004]

You Are Cordially Invited
To The Royal Event Of The Season

Of course I'm completely excited to be going back, but I'm also a bit nervous.
Grandma Clarisse will step down by the end of this year as queen,
and I'll be taking over since I'm now 21.
I know I studied diplomacy and political science at school,
but there was no course in "Queen" or "How To Run A Country 101."
But Grandma's going to help me, and I'll take over when she thinks I'm ready.
Of course I wonder, will I ever be ready?
In the meantime, I'm going to live in a beautiful palace like in a fairy tale,
and eventually sit on a throne and rule the people of Genovia.
Is that scary or what?
~Mia Thermopolis

Viscount Mabrey: So, as of the 20th of October last year, on the occasion of his 21 st birthday,
another Genovian of the royal bloodline became eligible to assume the throne.
My nephew, Lord Devereaux.
Queen Clarisse: I beg your pardon?
Viscount Mabrey: My nephew's mother was my wife's sister.
Therefore, Your Majesty, I am pleased to say that my nephew is ready to take his place
as Genovia's rightful king.
Queen Clarisse: Shut up!
Parliament Member: But isn't Princess Mia first in line to ascend the throne?
Lord Crawley: Not yet.
Genovian law states that a princess must marry before she can take the throne.
Queen Clarisse: We have never enforced that law.
A man doesn't have to marry to be king.
I mean, this is the 21st century, for heaven's sake.
My granddaughter should be given the same rights as any man.
Lord Palimore: Genovia shall have no queen lest she be bound in matrimony.
That is the law of Genovia for the last 300 years.
Princess Mia is not qualified to rule because she is unmarried.
Forgive me, Your Majesty.
Not all of us are sure that the princess is the most suitable choice to govern our great nation.

Mia: What kind of person agrees to an arranged marriage?
[Queen Clarisse look at the photo of her and King Renaldi]
Uh... you agreed to an arranged marriage.
Queen Clarisse: Yes, I did. And it turned out quite spendidly.
He was my best friend. We grew very fond of each other.
Mia: Sure, Grandma, but... I dream of love, not fondness.

Mia: Courage is not the absence of fear,
but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.
There are 550 years of Renaldis on these walls.
And I will up there next to my father.
I'm sure I want my chance to make a difference as a ruler.
Queen Clarisse: Spoken like a true queen.

Queen Clarisse: Would you care to explain what was going on out there?
Mia: Sorry. I... have met Lord Nicholas, actually. At the ball.
Didn't know who he was, so, you know, we danced and I flirted.
I feel so stupid right now.
Queen Clarisse: Well, as your queen I absolutely cannot condone it.
As a grandma, I say, 'right on'.

Nicholas: Uncle, I hate to say this, but you're wrong.
Princess Mia has managed to find a husband within a week.
Viscount Mabrey: Mia cannot possibly be happy with the idea of an arranged marriage.
Your task is to romance her.
Show her what a real relationship could be like. A relationship filled with heat and passion.
Nicholas: And change her mind about Andrew.
Viscount Mabrey: Exactly.

Power, my boy, means never having to say you're sorry.
~Viscount Mabrey

Mia: The point is that I...
Nicholas: What is the point?
Mia: The point is that I'm onto you...
Oh, boy... am I onto what you are trying to do.
Nicholas: And what am I trying to do?
Mia: I think we both know exactly what that is.

Nicholas: I'm Nick. Viscount Mabrey's nephew.
Andrew: Ah, the chap who's trying to stage the palace coup.
I'm Andrew Jacoby, nice to meet you.
Lilly: Lilly Moscovitz, official best friend of future queen.
I don't like you.
Nicholas: Pleasure.

Joe: If you hurt my girl, you will answer directly to me.
And whatever crime I commit against you, remember, I have diplomatic immunity in 46 countries. Including Puerto Rico.
Viscount Mabrey: Sir, you will find that the word 'fear' is not in my vocabulary.
Joe: Perhaps. But it's in your eyes.

Queen Clarisse: Why are you so against Princess Mia being queen?
Nicholas: Well, my uncle feels that Princess Mia doesn't know the people.
Queen Clarisse: And you feel you do know the people?
Nicholas: Yes. I was born here, I went to primary school here. I am a true Genovian.
Mia didn't even know she was Genovian until high school.
And to be frank, she's spent little time here since then.
Queen Clarisse: Well, I happen to feel that she'll make a great ruler.
She's terribly bright, sensitive, caring.
Nicholas: I know that.
Queen Clarisse: You do?
Nicholas: Yes, I do. But... How can one rule the people if they do not know the people?

[after kissing]
Mia: What are you doing? What is wrong with you?
You can't just go around kissing people. Particularly not engaged people.
Nicholas: You enjoyed it. You want to kiss again?
Mia: Well, I... No! Stop trying to confuse me.
Nicholas: What's confusing about a kiss?
Mia: You're just trying to make me like you, so that I won't want to marry Andrew,
and so that you can have the crown, ha!
Nicholas: Maybe I am, and maybe I just like kissing you.

Queen Clarisse: When are you going to start acting responsibility?
Hiding in a closet with a man who is not your betrothed?
Coming out of a fountain dripping wet with the same man, who is not your betrothed?
Mia: Do you think I plan for this kind of stuff to happen?
I lost it. Sometimes you just lose it.
Queen Clarisse: You can't afford to lose it. Other people lose it, we're supposed to find it!
People look up to us, and we're held to higher standards of behavior.
Can you try to grasp that concept?
Mia: The concept is grasped. The execution is a little elusive.

Nicholas: She's smart, she really cares about Genovia, maybe it wouldn't be so bad if she ran the country.
Viscount Mabrey: Are you mad?
Nicholas: She believes in Genovia so much that she's convinced herself to marry someone that she knows she can never love.

You chose me and I accepted.
And a gentleman never backs out on his word.
We are going to stand up in church and say "I do" and tomorrow we'll be man and wife.
And you are going to make an amazing queen of Genovia.
~Andrew Jacoby

I made my choice. Duty to my country over love.
It's what I've always done, it seems. It was drummed into me my whole life.
Now I've lost the only man I ever really loved.
Mia, I want you to make your choices as a woman.
Don't make the same mistakes I did.
Make your own mistakes. There'll be plenty of them, believe me.
Now you can go back into that church and get married, or you can walk away.
Whatever choice you make, let it come from your heart.
~Queen Clarisse Renaldi

A few moments ago, I realized the only reason I was getting married was because of a law,
and that didn't seem like a good enough reason.
So, I won't be getting married today.
My grandmother has ruled without a man at her side for quite some time, and I think she rocks at it!
So as the granddaughter of Queen Clarisse and King Rupert,
I ask the members of parliament to think about your daughters, your nieces, and sisters, and granddaughters, and ask yourself,
would you force them to do what you're trying to make me do?
I believe I will be a great queen.
I understand Genovia to be a land that combines the beauty of the past with all the best hope of the future.
I feel in my heart and soul I can rule Genovia.
I love Genovia.
Do you think that I would be up here in a wedding dress if I didn't?
I stand here, ready to make my place as your queen. Without a husband.
~Mia Thermopolis

I decline. I refuse to be king.
Ladies and gentlemen, it is Princess Mia who should have the crown.
She's bright, and she is caring.
But more importantly, she has a vision.
One that will take Genovia forward, and if the parliament were astute, they would name her queen.
Listen to her, she'll lead us into the 21st century.
And besides, just think how lovely she'll look on our postage stamp.
~Nicholas Devereaux

Mia: What is your dilemma, young man?
Nicholas: You are, in fact. [kneel]
I am in love with the queen-to-be, and I am inquiring if she loves me too.

ALONG CAME POLLY [2004]

For The Most Cautious Man On Earth,
Life Is About To Get Interesting
I know that I have a .013% chance of being hit by a car on my way home.
Or a one in 46,000 chance of falling through a subway grate.
So I try to manage that risk by avoiding danger
and having a plan and knowing what my next move is.
And I guess you don't exactly live your life that way.
Yeah... which is great, but I'm not gonna ever be a dirty dancer,
and I don't eat food with my hands,
and I really like you,
but I just don't think this is gonna work out.
[Reuben Feffer]

Since we have been together I have felt more uncomfortable, out of place, embarassed,
and just physically sick then I have in my entire life.
But I could not have gone through that,
I could not have thrown up 19 times in 48 days if I was not in love with you.
[Reuben Feffer]

I've been living my life, okay?
I've been in good relationships and I've been in shitty ones...
and I've moved alot...
and I've been happy, and I've been sad...
and I've been lonely...
and that is what I've been doing.
Which is a lot more then I can say for some freak,
who thinks he's gonna get the Ebola virus from a bowl of mixed nuts.
[Polly Prince]

[Reuben Feffer]: No Lisa, I'm not going to take you back
[Lisa Kramer]: What, why?
[Reuben Feffer]: Well, you screwed a SCUBA instructor on our honeymoon.
What kinda cold-hearted bitch will do that to someone they love.
I have to be an idiot to take you back.

Oh and by the way, I threw away all your little throw pillows.
Yea. Cuz throw pillows suck.
They serve no purpose.
They're purely decorative.
[Reuben to Lisa]

THE NOTEBOOK [2004]

Behind Every Great Love Is A Great Story

I am no one special, just a common man with common thoughts. I've led a common life.
There are no monuments dedicated to me, and my name will soon be forgotten.
But in one respect, I've succeeded as gloriously as anyone who ever lived.
~Duke

Noah: Who's this girl with Sarah?
Fin: Her name's Allie Hamilton. She's here for the summer with her family.
Dad's got more money than God.

 Noah: Do you remember me?
Allie: Yeah, sure, Mr. Underwear, was it? How could I forget.
Noah: I wanted to clear that up with you, because I'm really sorry about that.
It was a really stupid thing to do, crawl up a ferris wheel to talk to somebody.
But I had to be next to you. I was being drawn to you.
Allie, chuckles: Oh, jeez, what a line.

Noah: I can be fun, if you want... pensive, uh, smart, uh superstitious, brave.
And, I can be light on my feet. [doing tap dancing] I could be whatever you want.
You just tell me what you want and I'll be that for you.
Allie: You're dumb.
Noah: I could be that.

Allie: I haven't seen a movie in ages.
Noah: Really?
Allie: Not since I was a little kid.
Noah: What?
Allie: I'm busy, you know, I don't have a lot of time.
I have a very strict schedule. My days are all planned out.
I get up in the morning, breakfast, math tutor, Latin tutor, lunch,
tennis lessons, dance lessons, sometimes both,
French tutor, piano lesson, then I eat dinner.
And after dinner I spend time with my family.
And then I catch up on some reading.
Noah: Wow... Sounds like the road to success.
Allie: Oh, you're bet.
We're applying to all these colleges, Radcliffe, Sarah Lawrence, those are the ones we want.
Noah: And who's we?
Allie: What?
Noah: You just said "The ones that we want".
Allie: Mom and Daddy. We decide everything together.
Noah: Everything?
Allie: No, not everything, but the important things, yes.
Noah: And then everything else, you get to decide all by yourself?
Allie: Don't be rude.
Noah: I'm sorry.
Just trying to figure out what you do for fun.
Allie: What do you mean?
Noah: I don't know, I mean all those things are things you have to do, right?
So what do you do because you want to?
Allie: I just told you.

Noah: I always figured you were kinda...
Allie: Kinda what?
Noah: Just... Free...
Allie: What? I am free.
Allie: You don't seem like it.
Allie: Well, I am.

It was an improbable romance.
He was a country boy, she was from the city.
She had the world at her feet, while he didn't have 2 dimes to rub together.

They didn't agree on much. In fact, they rarely agreed on everything. They fought all the time.
And they challenged each other every day.
But despite their differences, they had one important thing in common.
They were crazy about each other.

Noah: The Windsor Plantation. It was built in 1772.
Rumor has it that Francis Marion proposed to his wife right here under these steps.
Allie: This place is gigantic.
Noah: Yeah, a gigantic piece of crap.
But I'm gonna buy it one day and I'm gonna fix it up.
All it needs is a new floor... and new walls and a roof...
Allie: Is that all?
Noah: And plumbing and electric.
Allie: And furniture.
Noah: Yes, and furniture.
But it's right on the water.
And there's a big old barn out there, I could turn that into my workshop.
Allie: Well, what about me? Don't I get any say in this?
Noah: You want a say in this?
Allie: Yes, I would.
Noah: What do you want?
Allie: I want a white house with blue shutters... and a room overlooking the river so I can paint.
Noah: Anything else?
Allie: Yes. I want a big old porch that wraps around the entire house.
We can drink tea and watch the sun down.
Noah: Okay.
Allie: You promise?
Noah: I promise.

Mrs. Hamilton: You are going to stop seeing Noah.
She is out fooling around with that boy till 2:00 in the morning and it has got to stop.
I didn't spend 17 years of my life raising a daughter and giving her everything
so she could throw it away on a summer romance.
She will wind up with her heart broken or pregnant.
He's a nice boy, but he's...
Allie: He's what? He's what? Tell me!
Mrs. Hamilton: He is trash, trash, trash... not for you.

Allie: I love him.
Mrs. Hamilton: You are 17 years old, you don't know anything about love.
Allie: Oh, and you do.
You don't look at Daddy the way I look at Noah.
You don't touch, or laugh, you don't play, you don't know anything about love.

You're going away!
You're leaving... and I'm staying here.
And I'm so happy that you're doing it, but you're gonna have a million things to do.
You got so much ahead of you.
I'm not going to have nice things, fancy things.
It's never gonna happen for me. It's not in the cards for me.
~Noah Calhoun

Summer romances end for all kinds of reasons.
But when all is said and done, they have one thing in common:
they are shooting stars, a spectacular moment of light in the heavens,
a fleeting glimpse of eternity.
And in a flash, they're gone.
Noah was desperate.
He wrote to Allie that he was sorry and stupid for breaking up with her.
He wrote to tell her that he still loved her, and he wanted to see her.
And that if she would write back, he would come to whenever she was.
He wrote one letter a day for a year, 365 letters, but they all went unanswered.
Finally, after a year of silence, he decided to put it all behind him and start a new life.
So he wrote a farewell letter, and he and Fin packed their bags and headed for Atlanta.

Lon: Allie, I've been thinking a lot about why we shouldn't get married.
Allie: Okay, I give up, why shouldn't we get married?
Lon: I couldn't think of anything at first, and then it just dawned on me.
Your parents...
Allie: My parents?
Lon: Your old mom and dad, thank you for that, are in love with me.
I'm exactly the type of man they want you to end up with.
Allie: Really?
Lon: You know, I'm wealthy, I'm from the South, I got a decent job,
I'm an incredible dancer, I'm a really smart guy...
Allie: So what's the problem, huh?
Lon: If you marry me, then you will have lost a life long battle of defiance against them.

Lon: Allie, I think you have to marry me. I think you need to marry me.
Allie: I do? Why?
Lon: Because if you do, your parents will always know the unhappiness that you feel for not being able to disappoint them.
Allie: I think you may have overlooked one minor detail.
Lon: What's that?
Allie: You have to get their permission first.
And I think you may have overestimated their affection for you.
Lon: Is that right? Oh, I don't think so.
Allie: Why not?
Lon: Cause I asked them already and they said yes.
Allie: What?
Lon: One more thing... [popped out the ring] I love you. Will you marry me, honey?
I know I kid around a lot, but I'm crazy about you.
Marry me? Make me the happiest man in the world.
Allie: Yes...

Martha: What do you want, Noah?
Noah: What do you mean, what do I want?
Martha: From me...
[Noah sighs]
Sometimes when you talk to me, you don't even see me.
A woman knows when a man looks into her eyes and sees someone else.
Noah: Now you know I want to give you all the things that you want, right?
But I can't. Because they're gone, they're broken.

Dr. Barnwell: So I understand that you read to Miss Hamilton.
Duke: Yeah, to help her remember.
You don't think it'll help?
Dr. Barnwell: No, I don't.
Duke: She remembers, Doc.
I read to her and she remembers. Not always, but she remembers.
Dr. Barnwell: But senile dementia is irreversible. It's degenerative.
After a certain point, its victims don't come back.
Duke: Yeah, that's what they keep telling me.
Dr. Barnwell: I just don't want you to get your hopes up.
Duke: Thanks, Doc, but you know what they say?
Science goes only so far and then comes God.

It was real, wasn't it? You and me.
Such a long time ago, we were just a couple of kids.
But we really loved each other, didn't we?
~Allie Hamilton

Duke: I don't know, there's something about today. Maybe it's a day for a miracle.
Mary Allen: Daddy, come home. Mama doesn't know us.
She doesn't recognize you. She'll never understand.
Maggie: We miss you.
This is crazy, you living here.
Edmond: Yeah, you know we'll all help with Mom. We can take shifts visiting.
Duke: Look, guys, that's my sweetheart in there. I'm not leaving her. This is my home now.
Your mother is my home.

Allie: Why didn't you write me? Why?
It wasn't over for me.
I waited for you for 7 years. And now it's too late.
Noah: I wrote you 365 letters. I wrote you every day for a year.
Allie: You wrote me?
Noah: Yes.
It wasn't over. It still isn't over.

Allie: Tell me about the letters, Mother. Is it true?
Mrs. Hamilton: Yes.
Allie: You watched me cry myself to sleep for months and months, and you never said anything.
How could you do that?
Mrs. Hamilton: I'm sorry.
Allie: Oh, you're sorry! Because of you my entire life is ruined!

Noah: So what are you gonna do, Allie?
Allie: I don't know.
Noah: We're back to that? Are we back there?
What about the past couple of days? They happened, you know?
Allie: I know that they happened, and they were wonderful, but they were also very irresponsible.
[Noah kicks the chair]
I have a fiance waiting for me at a hotel, who's gonna be crushed when he finds out.
Noah: So you make love to me and then you go back to your husband? Was that your plan?
Was that a test that I didn't pass?
Allie: No, I made a promise to a man, he gave me a ring and I gave him my word.
Noah: And your word is shot to hell now, don't you think?
Allie: I don't ... I don't know. I'll find out when I talk to him.
Noah: This is not about keeping your promise, and it's not about following your heart, it's about security.
Allie: What is that supposed to mean?
Noah: Money! He's got a lot of money!
Allie: Now I hate you, you smug bastard!
Noah: If you leave here, I hate you.
Allie: Have you been paying attention to anything that's happening?
Noah: I guess not. I think I must have misread all of those signals.
Allie: I guess you did.
Noah: You're bored! You're bored and you know it.
You wouldn't be here if there wasn't something missing.
Allie: You arrogant son of a bitch!
Noah: Would you just stay with me?
Allie: Stay with you? What for? Look at us, we're already fighting.
Noah: Well, that's what we do. We fight.
You tell me when I'm being an arrogant son of a bitch
and I tell you when you're being a pain in the ass. Which you are 99% of the time.
I'm not afraid to hurt your feelings.
They have like a 2 second rebound rate and you're back doing the next pain-in-the-ass thing.
Allie: So what?
Noah: So it's not gonna be easy. It's gonna be really hard.
And we're gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that, because I want you.
I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day.
Will you do something for me? Please?
Will you just picture your life for me?
30 years from now, 40 years from now, what's it look like?
If it's with that guy, go. Go!
I lost you once, I think I could do it again, if I thought it's what you really wanted.
But don't you take the easy way out.
Allie: What easy way? There is no easy way, no matter what I do, somebody gets hurt.
Noah: Would you stop thinking about what everyone wants?
Stop thinking about what I want, what he wants, what your parents want...
What do you want?! What do you want?
Allie: It's not that simple.
Noah: What do you want? Goddamn it, what do you want?!

Lon: The way I see it, I got 3 choices.
One, I can shoot him.
Two, I can kick the crap out of him.
Or three, I leave you.
All that's no good, cause none of those options get me you.
And in spite of everything, I love you.
Allie: I love you too.
Lon: I meant what I said when I gave you that ring.
Allie: I did too. It's just that when I'm with Noah, I feel like one person
and when I'm with you I feel like someone totally different.
Lon: It's normal not to forget your first love.
I love you, Allie, but I want you for myself.
I don't want to have to convince my fiance that she should be with me.
Allie: You don't have to. I already know I should be with you.

Allie: Will you tell them I love them?
Noah: I will.
Allie: And I'm sorry.
Noah: I'll tell them, sweetheart.

Allie: What's gonna happen when I can't remember anything any more? What will you do?
Noah: I'll be here. I'll never leave you.
