A BUG'S LIFE [1998]

An Epic Of Miniature Proportions

You see Hopper, Nature has a certain order.
The ants pick the food, the ants keep the food, and the grasshoppers leave!
[Princess Atta]

It's a bug-eat-bug world out there, princess.
One of those Circle of Life kind of things.
Now let me tell you how things are supposed to work:
The sun grows the food, the ants pick the food, the grasshoppers eat the food...
[Hopper]

[Hopper]: Let this be a lesson to all you ants! Ideas are very dangerous things!
You are mindless, soil-shoving losers, put on this Earth to serve us!
[Flik]: You're wrong, Hopper. Ants are not meant to serve grasshoppers.
I've seen these ants do great things, and year after year they somehow manage to pick food for themselves *and* you.
So-so who is the weaker species?
Ants don't serve grasshoppers! It's *you* who need *us*!
We're a lot stronger than you say we are... And you know it, don't you?

PATCH ADAMS [1998]

Laughter Is Contagious

I wanted to become a doctor so I could serve others.
And because of that, I've lost everything.
But I've also gained everything.
[Hunter Patch Adams]

All of life is a coming home.
Salesmen, secretaries, coal miners, beekeepers, sword swallowers, all of us.
All the restless hearts of the world, all trying to find a way home.
It's hard to describe what I felt like then.
Picture yourself walking for days in the driving snow;
you don't even know you're walking in circles.
The heaviness of your legs in the drifts, your shouts disappearing into the wind.
How small you can feel, and how far away home can be.
Home.
The dictionary defines it as both a place of origin and a goal or destination.
And the storm?
The storm was all in my mind.
Or as the poet Dante put it:
In the middle of the journey of my life, I found myself in a dark wood,
for I had lost the right path.
Eventually I would find the right path, but in the most unlikely place.
[Hunter Patch Adams]

*standing on the edge of a cliff contemplating suicide. He talks to God...*
So what now, huh? What do you want from me?
*looks down over cliff, a rock tumbles off*
Yeah, I could do it. We both know you wouldn't stop me.
So answer me please. Tell me what you're doing.
Okay, let's look at the logic.
You create man. Man suffers enormous amounts of pain. Man dies.
Maybe you should have had just a few more brainstorming sessions prior to creation.
You rested on the seventh day.
Maybe you should've spent that day on compassion.
*looks down over the cliff again*
You know what? You're not worth it.
*walks away from the cliff*
[Hunter Patch Adams]

We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease.
[Hunter Patch Adams]

Now you have the ability to keep me from graduating.
You can keep me from getting the title and the white coat.
But you can't control my spirit, gentlemen.
You can't keep me from learning, you can't keep me from studying.
So you have a choice: you can have me as a professional colleague, passionate,
or you can have me as an outspoken outsider, still adament.
Either way I'll probably still be viewed as a thorn.
But I promise you one thing: I am a thorn that will not go away
[Hunter Patch Adams]

When I was a girl I would look out my bedroom window at the caterpillars;
I envied them so much.
No matter what they were before, no matter what happened to them,
they could just hide away and turn into these beautiful creatures that could fly away completely untouched.
[Corinne Fisher]

You're focusing on the problem.
If you focus on the problem, you can't see the solution.
Never focus on the problem!
[Arthur Mendelson]

See what no one else sees.
See what everyone chooses not to see... out of fear, conformity or laziness.
See the whole world a new each day!
[Arthur Mendelson]

Our job is to rigorously and ruthlessly train the humanity out of you and make you into something better.
We're gonna make doctors out of you.
[Dean Walcott]

MULAN [1998]

This Time,
The Princess Saves The Prince

A single grain of rice can tip the scale.
One may be the difference between victory and defeat.
~The Emperor

You are a disgrace!
You may look like a bride, but you will never bring your family honor!
~The Matchmaker

Mulan: You shouldn't have to go!
Mother: Mulan...
Mulan: There are plenty of young men to fight for China.
Father: It is an honor to protect my country and my family.
Mulan: So, you'll die for honor.
Father: I will die doing what's right.
Mulan: But if you...
Father: I know my place!
It is time to learned yours.

First Ancestor: Mushu, awaken.
Mushu, after clanking several times: I liiiiveeee!!!!
So tell me what mortal needs my protection, great ancestor.
You just say the word and I'm there.
First Ancestor: Mushu...
Mushu: And let me say somethin'.
Anybody who's foolish enough to threaten our family, vengeance will be mineee!!!
First Ancestor: Mushu!
These are the family guardians. They...???
Mushu: Protect the family.
First Ancestor: And you, o demoted one?
Mushu: I... ring the gong.
First Ancestor: That's right.
Now, wake up the ancestors.
Mushu: One family reunion comin' right up.
[ring the gong]
Okay, people, people, look alive, let's go, come on, get up, let's move it, rise and shine.
Y'all way past the beauty sleep thing, trust me.

Mulan: Who are you?
Mushu: Who am I?
Who am I?
I am the guardian of lost souls.
I am the powerful, the pleasurable, the indestructible Mushu.

My ancestors send a little lizard to help me?
~Mulan

Mulan: You're tiny.
Mushu: Of course. I'm travel size for your convenience.
If I was my real size, your cow here [to the horse] would die of fright.

Mulan: Am I late?
Mushu: No time to talk. [feeds Mulan a spoon of porridge]
Now remember, it's your first day of training,
so listen to your teacher and no fightin', play nice with the other kids,
unless one of the other kids wanna fight, then you have to kick the other's kid's butt.

Prepare to fight.
If we die, we die in honor.
~Captain Shang

Your ancestors never sent me.
They don't even like me.
You risked your life to help people you love.
I risked your life to help myself.
At least you had good intentions.
~Mushu

Shan Yu: Bow to me!
The Emperor: No matter how the wind howls, the mountain cannot bow to it.

Chi Fu: That creature's not worth protecting.
Shang: She's a hero.
Chi Fu: She's a woman.
She'll never be worth anything.

Take this [give his medal to Mulan],
so your family will know what you have done for me.
And this [give Shan Yu's sword to Mulan],
so the world will know what have you done for China.
~The Emperor

The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all.
You don't meet a girl like that every dynasty
~The Emperor, to Captain Shang

Mulan, kneel to his father: Father, I brought you the sword of Shan Yu.
And the crest of The Emperor.
They're gifts to honor the Fa family.
Father, hugs Mulan: The greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter.
Great, she brings home a sword.
If you ask me, she should've brought home a man.
~Grandmother

Captain Shang: Excuse me, does Fa Mulan live here?
[Grandmother and Mother point him the direction]
Thank you.
Grandmother: Whoo, sign me up for the next war.

Mulan, to Shang: Would you like to stay for dinner?
Grandmother, yelling from somewhere: Would you like to stay forever?

THE PRINCE OF EGYPT [1998]

Two Brothers United by Friendship Divided by Destiny

Seti: Responsible, huh!
Do you know the meaning of that word, Rameses?
Rameses: I understand, Father.
Seti: And do you understand the task for which your birth has destined you?
The ancient traditions.
When I pass into the next world, then you will be the morning and evening star.
Rameses: One damaged temple does not destroy centuries of tradition.
Seti: But one weak link can break the chain of a mighty dynasty!

Miriam: I know to whom I speak, Aaron.
[to Moses] I know who you are, and you are not a prince of Egypt.
Aaron: Miriam...
Moses: What did you say?
Aaron: Your Highness, pay her no heed.
C-come, Miriam. May I discuss something with you?
Miriam: No, Aaron, no!
Please Moses, you must believe.
Aaron: That's enough.
Miriam: You were born of my mother, Yocheved.
Aaron: Stop it!
Miriam: You are our brother!
Moses: Now you go too far. You shall be punished!
Aaron, kneel before Moses: No! Please, Your Highness.
She's ill. She's very ill.
We beg your forgiveness.
[to Miriam] Please, Miriam, let us go.
Miriam: No, Aaron.
[to Moses] Our mother set you adrift in a basket to save your life!
Moses: Save my life? From who?
Miriam: Ask the man that you call "Father".
Moses: How dare you?!
Miriam: God saved you to be our deliverer.
Moses: Enough of this.
Miriam: And you are, Moses, you are the deliverer.
Moses: I said enough! You will regret this night!

Seti: The Hebrews grew too numerous.
They might have risen against us.
Moses: Father, tell me you didn't do this.
Seti: Moses, sometimes, for the greater good, sacrifices must be made.
Moses: Sacrifices?
Seti, hug Moses: Oh, my son, they were only slaves.

Moses: This is where you found me?
The Queen: Moses, please try to understand.
Moses: So, everything I thought, everything I am, is a lie?
The Queen: No! You are our son, and we love you.
Moses: Why did you choose me?
The Queen: We didn't, Moses. The gods did.

Rameses: I am Egypt, the morning and the evening star.
If I say day is night, it will be written, and you will be what I say you are.
I say you are innocent.
Moses: What you say does not matter.
You don't understand.
I can't stay here any longer.
Rameses: Moses.
Moses: No!
All I've ever known to be true is a lie.
I'm not who you think I am.
Rameses: What are you talking about?
Moses: Go ask the man I once called "Father".

God: And so, unto Pharaoh, I shall send... you.
Moses: Me?
Who am I to lead these people?
They'll never believe me, they won't even listen me.
God: I shall teach you what to say.
Moses: But I was their enemy.
I was the Prince of Egypt, the son of the man who slaughtered their children.
You've chosen the wrong messenger.
How can I even speak to these people?
God: WHO MADE MAN'S MOUTH?
WHO MADE THE DEAF, THE MUTE, THE SEEING OR THE BLIND?
DID NOT I?
NOW GO!
Oh Moses, I shall be with you when you go to the king of Egypt.
But Pharaoh will not listen.
So I will stretch out My hand, and smite Egypt with all My wonders.

Take the staff in your hand, Moses.
With it, you shall do My wonders.
I shall be with you, Moses
~God

Moses: Rameses, in my heart, you are my brother, but things cannot be as they were.
Rameses: I see no reason why not.
Moses: You know I am a Hebrew, and the God of the Hebrews came to me.
Rameses: What?
Moses: He commands that you let His people go.

Rameses: Moses, I cannot change what you see.
I have to maintain the ancient traditions.
I bear the weight of my father's crown.
Moses: Do you still not understand what Seti was?
Rameses: He was... a great leader.
Moses: His hands bore the blood of thousands of children.
Rameses: Hmph, slaves.
Moses: My people.
And I can no longer hide in the desert while they suffer... at your hands.
Rameses: So, you have returned only to free them.
[Moses put down the ring that Rameses gave him]
Moses: I'm sorry.

I do not know this God, neither will I let your people go.
I will not be the weak link!
~Rameses

Aaron: So, Moses, how does it feel when you get struck to the ground?
Moses: I didn't mean to cause you more pain.
I'm just trying to do as God told me.
Aaron: God? When did God start caring about any of us?
In fact, Moses, when did you start caring about slaves?
Was it when you found out that you were one of us?
Tzipporah: Don't listen to him.
Moses: No, he's right.
I did not see because I did not wish to see.

Rameses Son: Isn't that the man who did all this?
Rameses: Yes. But one must wonder... why.
Moses: Because no kingdom should made on the backs of slaves.

You Hebrews have been nothing but trouble.
My father had the right idea about how to deal with your people.
And I think it's time I finished the job.
And there shall be a great cry in all of Egypt such as never has been or ever will be again!
~Rameses

God has come to me again, saying,
"Take a lamb, and with its blood mark the lintel and posts of every door.
For tonight I shall pass through the land of Egypt and smite all the firstborn.
But when I see the blood upon your door, I will pass over you,
and the plague shall not enter."
~Moses
