WAR OF THE WORLDS [2005]

They're Already Here

No one would have believed in the early years of the 21st century
that our world was being watched by intelligences greater than our own,
that as men busied themselves about their various concerns,
they observed and studied,
the way a man with a microscope might scrutinize the creatures that swarm
and multiply in a drop of water.
With infinite complacency, men went to and fro about the globe,
confident of our empire over this world.
Yet across the gulf of space, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic
regarded our planet with envious eyes,
and slowly and surely drew their plans against us.
~Narrator

Rachel: It hit right behind our house.
Ray: Yeah, well, it's not gonna hit there again, okay?
Because lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place.
[the lightning strike] Oh, shit!
Rachel, hide under the table with Ray: Where's Robbie?
Ray: I don't know.
Rachel: Is Robbie okay?
[the lightning keep hitting] Are you okay?
Ray: Where's the thunder?
Rachel: Why won't it stop?

Are we still alive?
~Rachel

Ray: Where were you?
News Producer: Out there in the Pine Barrens.
We were attached to a National Guard unit. The 83rd Mechanized.
They moved on one of those things around midnight.
They got some kind of shield around them.
You can't see it, but everything we fire at them detonates too early.
before we can get close enough to cause any damage.
When they flash that thing, everything lights up like Hiroshima.
Ray: There's more than one?
News Producer: You gotta be kidding me, right?
We were feeding New York, but New York went dark.
So we patched over D.C, they went down. L.A., Chicago, uplinked to London.
Even called the affiliates to try to get them to catch the feed but nobody answers.
It's the same everywhere.
Once the Tripods start to move, no more news comes out of that area.

Ray: Okay, hard-ass, what's your plan, huh? You're in charge now! Tell me what we're doing.
Robbie: Catch up with these soldiers!
Hook up with whoever else isn't dead and we get back at them. That's what we do.
Ray: Let's try one that doesn't involve your 10-year-old sister joining the army.
You have anything like that?
Robbie: Just tell us the truth. You wanna come off all wise and shit!
You only chose Boston because you hope Mom is there.
And if she's there, you can dump us on her.
You can dump us on her, then you'll only have to care about yourself,
which is exactly the way you like it.

Robbie, where are you trying to go?
What are you trying to do?
Who's gonna take care of me if you go?
~Rachel

Harlan: Those machines, those tripods they got? They buried them. Right under our feet.
Since before there were even people here.
They've been planning this for a million years.
We're beat to shit.
Ray: Please, my daughter...
Harlan: Think about it.
They defeated the greatest power in the world in a couple days.
Walked right over us.
And these are only the first. They'll keep coming.
This is not a war anymore than there's a war between men and maggots.
This is an extermination.

I drive an ambulance in the city... drove an ambulance in the city.
That's all over now, huh?
You know the people that make it, Ray?
The ones that don't flatline before the hospital?
It's the ones that keep their eyes open. That keep looking at you. Keep thinking.
They're the ones that survive.
We can't lose our heads, Ray.
Running, that's what'll kill you.
And I'm dead set on living.
~Harlan Ogilvy

Ray: Why did you bring us here?
Harlan: To fight them together, Ray.
We'll be the ones coming up from underground.
When the time is right, take them by surprise, the way they took us. Take them by surprise.
We're right under their feet, Ray. Right here, under their feet.

Harlan, to Rachel: If anything happens to your daddy, I will take care of you.
Ray, to Harlan: You don't have anything to say to her, do you understand?
If you wanna talk to somebody, if you wanna ask a question, you ask me.

What exactly is your plan, Ray?
I know what I'm gonna do. How about you?
You gonna sit here? Wait for them to come get you? Is that your plan?
Maybe you wanna get caught.
Couple days hiding in a basement too much for you, I bet.
You'll probably turn yourself right in.
Maybe you'll be okay.
Maybe you'll get lucky, and they'll train you as their pet.
Feed you, train you how to do tricks.
~Harlan Ogilvy

You and me, I don't think we're on the same page.
~Harlan Ogilvy

Do you understand what I'm gonna have to do?
I can't let my daughter die because of you.
~Ray Ferrier

From the moment the invaders arrived, breathed our air, ate and drank, they were doomed. They were undone, destroyed, after all of man's weapons and devices had failed,
by the tiniest creatures that God in His wisdom put upon this earth.
By the toll of a billion deaths, man had earned his immunity,
his right to survive among this planet's infinite organisms.
And that right is ours against all challenges,
for neither do men live, nor die, in vain.

HIDE AND SEEK [2005]

Come Out Come Out Whatever You Are

I don't want to be too forward,
but I don't notice a lot of kids around
and I'm trying to find other kids to have play dates with Emily.
[David]

Come out come out, where ever you are...
[Emily]

He doesn't want me to talk about him.
[Emily, about Charlie]

[Emily]: Do you like her, Daddy?
[David]: Emily.
[Emily]: Charlie says you do.
[David]: Stop this.
[Emily]: Did Daddy tell you about my mommy?
[David]: I'm sure Elizabeth doesn't want to hear such things.
[Emily]: She killed herself.
She slit her wrists and drowned in the bathtub.
Let's hope you don't wind up like her.

[David]: You know Charlie doesn't exist.
[Emily]: You shouldn't say that.
[David]: Why not?
[Emily]: You're gonna make him mad.

UPTOWN GIRL [2003]

They're About To Teach Each Other
How To Act Their Age

Some fairy tales are true, most of there stories we make up to help us deal with real life;
it all depends on your point of view,
but here are the facts...
there was once a princess, who lived in a castle,
high above the streets of an enchanted kingdom.
The king and queen were long gone but they left her with a treasure,
that she would stay a princess forever.
[Ray]

Act your age, not your shoe size.
[Ray]

As my best friend, it is your duty not to lie to me.
[Molly Gunn]

[Ray]: You can have your job back, you know.
[Molly Gunn]: I don't think so. You and I, we're gonna be friends. Okay?
[Ray]: Grown-ups never stay friends with kids.
[Molly Gunn]: I don't see any grownups around here.
[Ray]: I do.

[Ray]: Are you still moping over that disgusting guy?
Other people always let you down.
Why don't you forget them and do something for yourself?
[Molly Gunn]: Like what?
[Ray]: I don't know. Something you're good at. And I don't mean shopping.
[Molly Gunn]: Maybe some of us aren't good at anything.
[Ray]: Every grown-up is good at something.
Oh, my bad. I don't see any grown-ups around here.
[Molly Gunn]: What's so great about being a grown-up anyway?
So I can turn out like you?
[Ray]: You're scared.

[Neal]: Molly, I came here to see you.
[Molly Gunn]: For what?
[Neal]: I haven't been able to write a single decent song since we last saw each other.
Molly, I'm sorry.
I was trying to take a step forward, but I took two steps backward instead.
[Molly]: Why don't you take one step sideways?
Then we can stop doing this silly little dance.

[Neal]: When I'm not ready, you hunt me down.
When I try and make it work, you're not interested.
[Molly Gunn]: Ever since we met, it's about what I'm doing wrong...
but I'm not the one with the problem.
You are, you and your selfishness.
All you do is take.
I've got nothing for you right now,
so... maybe it's time to start thinking about someone other than yourself.

I AM SAM [2001]

Love Is All You Need

All you need is love.
[Lucy]

I want no other daddy but you. [shouts]
Did you hear that?
I said I didn't want any other daddy but him.
Why don't you write that down?
[Lucy, being observed]

[Sam]: You think what they think.
[Rita]: It doesn't matter what I think. It matters that we win.
[Sam]: No, you think what they think. You think Sam can't take care of Lucy!
[Rita]: Sam, it doesn't matter what I think!
[Sam]: It matters to me!

[Sam]: Yeah, but I tried, I tried hard.
[Rita]: Try harder!
[Sam]: Yeah, but you don't know, you don't know!
[Rita]: I don't know WHAT?
[Sam]: Yeah, you don't know what is like when you try, and you try, and you try, and you try, and you don't ever get there!
Because you were born perfect and I was born like this, and you're perfect!
[Rita]: Oh, is that right?
[Sam]: People like you don't know...
[Rita]: People like me?
[Sam]: People like you don't know what is like to get hurted.
Because you don't have feelings.
People like you don't feel anything!

[Sam]: Lucy doesn't need me anymore.
She has a new family now... and she doesn't need me anymore.
[Rita]: Is that what she said?
[Sam]: It's because I know that. Because I just know that.
[Rita]: Well. That's the first stupid thing I've ever heard you say.

[Rita]: Now, Ms. Cossell, in all the time that you've known them, have you ever questioned Sam's ability as a father?
[Annie]: Never.
[Rita]: Never?
[Annie]: Never.
Look at Lucy. She's strong. She displays true empathy for people, all kinds of people.
I know that you all think she's as smart as she is despite him, but it's because of him.
[Rita]: So what you're saying is you don't worry about Lucy's future?
[Annie]: No, I do.
[Rita]: Ah...
[Annie]: I worry all the time.
I worry if they take Lucy away from her father they will take away an enormous piece of her, and I worry that she will spend the rest of her life trying to fill that hole.

[Conner Rhodes]: Are you a retard too?
[Lucy]: No!
[Conner Rhodes]: How do you know?
[Lucy]: Because he told me.
[Conner Rhodes]: But he's a retard!
[Lucy]: It takes one to know one.

[Lucy]: Why are men bald?
[Sam]: Sometimes they're bald because their head is shiny and they don't have hair on it.
So their head is just more of their face.

[Lucy]: I won't read the word!
[Sam]: I'm your father and I'm telling you to read the word.
Cause I can tell you to because I'm your father.
[Lucy]: I'm stupid.
[Sam]: You are not stupid!
[Lucy]: Yes, I am.
[Sam]: No, you are not stupid 'cause you can read that word.
[Lucy]: I don't wanna read it if you can't.
[Sam]: No, because it makes me happy!
It makes me happy hearing you read.
Yeah, it makes me happy when you're reading.

[Lucy]: Daddy, did God made for you to be like this or was it an accident?
[Sam]: Ok, what do you mean?
[Lucy]: I mean you're different.
[Sam]: But what do you mean?
[Lucy]: You're not like other daddies.
[Sam]: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Yeah, I'm sorry.
[Lucy]: It's ok, daddy. It's ok. Don't be sorry.
I'm lucky. Nobody else's daddy ever comes to the park.
[Sam]: Yeah! Yeah! Yeah, we are lucky. Aren't we lucky? Yeah!
