30 DAYS OF NIGHT [2007]

They're Coming!

Barrow, Alaska - Northernmost town in the U.S.
Isolated in 80 miles of roadless wilderness.
Cut off every winter for 30 days of night.

Ally Riis, about her slaughtered dogs: What sick jerk would do this?
John Riis: Every kennel. Every dog we had.
Eben: Did you fight with anyone recently, John?
Ally Riis: I'll kill them. I'll kill them.
Eben: This wasn't done long ago. I'll find them, okay?

Carter: I saw Wilson's helicopter logo.
Pulled that stuff out before it got totally trashed.
Eben: You keep your copter under lock and key, don't you?
Wilson: Yeah, I put it in dry dock when the tourists headed south.
I haven't looked at it for days.
They ripped out the throttle, the rotors, half the fucking helicopter!
It's my life, Eben.
Why would someone rip the hell out of my bird?

Eben: Let me tell you what I got.
You don't work at the refinery.
You didn't fly in.
Somebody's have seen you.
And you're definitely not from around here.
How'd you get in?
[The Stranger didn't say anything]
Eben: All right.
We got a long time to figure this out.
Nobody's coming for you for a month.
[The Stranger smirks]

Bar the windows.
Try to hide.
They're coming.
This time they gonna take me with them, honor me.
For all that I have done.
~The Stranger

This is Sheriff Eben Oleson.
Stay in your homes, lock your doors and load your firearms.
This is not a drill.
~Eben Oleson

Anyone with a genny should go home immediately, just to be safe.
If you don't have one, you should meet at the diner.
~Eben Oleson

No way out of town.
No one to come help.
You can feel it.
That cold ain't the weather, that's death approaching.
Who you think they gonna take first?
The girl who thinks a gun will help her?
The kid. sheriff's kid?
Or the old gal?
~The Stranger

Jake: They're like vampires, you know.
Stella: Vampires don't exist, Jake.
Doug: They don't fall when you shoot them.
Beau: Hell, neither do I.

Stella: I should've fought harder.
Kept Wilson here.
Eben: It's hard to stop someone when their family's at stake.
The things you do to save your own.
Stella: We were like that once. Weren't we?

I'm done playing with this one.
You wanna play with me now?
~Little Girl Vampire

Carter: Eben, could we make it to your station if somebody created a diversion?
Eben: How?
Stella: These things can't survive the sun.
What if we brought the sun early?
Helen had that operation at home.
Jake: Yeah, she used an ultraviolet light to grow the stuff.
Stella: I can run for her place, let them follow me.
Hit them with the sun lamp while the rest of you go to the sheriff's station.
Beau: Just because something stopped Bela Lugosi, doesn't mean it can stop these things.
Stella: Why would they send that stranger to cut us off if they can handle the light?
Jake: What if it doesn't work?
Stella: It has to.

You do understand?
What can be broken must be broken.
~Marlow

It took centuries for us to make them believe we were only bad dreams.
We cannot give them reason to suspect.
Destroy them all.
~Marlow

I can smell your blood.
~Eben Oleson

Stella: What did you do to yourself?
Eben: What I had to.

28 WEEKS LATER [2007]

Week Twenty-Eight: No Escape

Karen: He'll be hungry.
When he gets back, he'll want something to eat.
Jacob: Here we go again.
Let me tell you something, sweetheart, it's been 5 days since your boyfriend ran out on us.
If he's still breathing, he won't be interested in pasta.
It'll be your fucking neck!
Karen: Don't you say that!
Don: Out of order, Jacob.
Jacob: Why? We all know it's true.
The sooner she faces it, the better.
There are no survivors. It's just us in here and them out there.

15 days later, mainland Britain is quarantined

28 days later, mainland Britain has been destroyed by the rage virus

5 weeks later, the infected have died of starvation

11 weeks later, an American-led NATO Forces enters London

18 weeks later, mainland Britain is declared free of infection

24 weeks later, reconstruction begins

We are headed for our area of security and reconstruction designated as District One.
District One is located on the Isle of Dogs.
Although the Isle of Dogs is completely safe, the surrounding area of London is not.
There are a large number of bodies still not cleared from the original outbreak of infection.
Rats and wilds dogs are prevalent, as is disease.
New arrivals are reminded for their own safety
it is absolutely forbidden to sross the river and leave the security zone.
You will be joining15,000 civilians who are already resident in District One.
As we approach your new home, you'll notice a dramatically increased military presence.
The US Army is responsible for your safety.
We will do everything we can do to make your repatriation as easy as possible.
Inside District One, however, we believe you'll be pleasantly surprised.
We have hot and cold running water, 24-hour electricity, a medical centre,
a supermarket and even a pub.
~Train Announcer

General Stone: Major, what are you afraid of?
Major Scarlet: What if it comes back?
General Stone: It won't come back.
Major Scarlet: What if it does?
General Stone: If it comes back, we kill it. Code Red.

Andy: I get worried I'm gonna forget what she looks like.
Tammy: You won't forget.
Andy: I don't even have a picture of her.
Tammy: You won't forget.

Major Scarlet: There's no question, sir, she has the virus. She's infected.
General Stone: Why isn't she showing any symptoms?
Major Scarlet: I don't know.
General Stone: Speculate.
Major Scarlet: A genetic abnormality which acts as some sort of natural immunity?
But the virus is still in her blood and saliva, so technically she's not immune.
She's a carrier.
General Stone: She has the abiliry to infect others?
Major Scarlet: Yes, sir, absolutely.

Doyle: Anyway, what about you?
Why the hell are you here?
Major Scarlet: Their mother had very special blood.
A natural kind of immunity to the virus.
Not all genetic traits are passed on, they can skip a generation or vanish altogether, but...
Doyle: But they might have it.
Major Scarlet: It's a possibility.
So their lives are far more valuable than mine. Or yours.
Doyle: I got it.

THE GOLDEN COMPASS [2007]

There Are Worlds Beyond Our Own
The Compass Will Show The Way

There are many universes and many earths parallel to each other.
Worlds like yours where people's souls live inside their bodies,
and words like mine, where they walk beside us,
as animal spirits we call daemons.
So many worlds, but connecting them all is Dust.
Dust was here before the witches of the air, the Gyptians of the water, and the bears of the ice.
In my world, scholars invented an alethiometer, a golden compass,
and it showed them all that was hidden.
But the ruling power, fearing any truth but their own, destroyed these devices
and forbade the very mention of Dust.
One compass remains, however, and only one who can read it.
~Serafina Pekkala

The behavior of these particles is quite unmistakable.
Dust is flowing into this man, through his daemon, from a city in another world.
A world much like ours in a parallel universe coexisting with our own.
Invisible, intangible, inaccessible.
Until now.
From there, and from a billion other worlds, Dust flows.
Worlds of infinite possibilities.
Some where men have no daemons.
Some where daemons have no men.
And even some where there is no Magisterium and no Authority.
~Lord Asriel

Roger: Kids keep disappearin'.
They go after the poor kids, see.
The orphans and the servant kids as well.
Lyra: Roger, I promise, if you was taken by the Gobblers, I'd come and rescue you.
You'd come and get me too, wouldn't you?
Roger: Course.
But everybody would go looking for you if you was Gobbled.
You're a lady.
Lyra: Says who?
Roger: Cook.
He says that's why your uncle left you here, to make you a lady.
Lyra: Nobody can make me a lady.
Not the master and scholars and porters combined, right?
Take it back, or we ain't best mates no more!
Roger: All right, all righr, you ain't a lady.

When I was a young woman, I knew that no one could ever really understand me,
except, of course, my daemon,
and that it would be best if we were free to do as we pleased.
~Mrs. Coulter

Master: It's for you, Lyra.
Lyra: What is this?
Master: An alethiometer. Also known as a golden compass.
It was given to the college by Lord Asriel many years ago.
And now I'm giving it to you.
I feel you are meant to have it.
Lyra: What is it for?
Master: It tells the truth.
We've always tried to acquaint you with the truth.
But the secrets at the heart of things elude scholars and Authorities.
But this lets you glimpse things as they are.

Lyra: What's the Magisterium for?
Mrs. Coulter: The Magisterium is what people need.
They keep things working by telling people what to do.
Lyra: But, you told the Master you did whatever you pleased.
Mrs. Coulter, giggles: Ah, that's right. Clever girl.
Well, some people know what's best for them, and some people don't.
Besides, they don't tell people what to do in a mean, petty way,
they tell them what to do in a kindly way, to keep them out of danger.

It's an alethiometer.
It's a truth measurer.
A golden compass.
It enables you to see what others wish to hide.
You got 3 hands you can control.
By pointing at 3 symbols, you can ask any sort of question you can imagine.
Once you got your question framed, this blue needle points to more symbols that give you the answer.
~Farder Coram

Sister Clara: Billy Costa, why didn't you write anything?
Your mother must be missing you terribly.
Billy: I don't know what to put in the letter, miss.
You haven't told us what we're here for.
Sister Clara: You're here to help us.
And just as soon as you've helped us, we'll send you back home.
That's what you should write.
Or don't they teach Gyptian children to write?
Billy: They teach us to write the truth, miss.

Lyra: It's all bigger and scarier than we ever thought.
Pan: Maybe we shouldn't be doing this.
Lyra: But we've got to, thought, ain't we?

Lyra: Is that what they pay you? Whiskey?
Iorek Byrnison, you're the first ice bear I ever met.
I was ever so excited, and scared.
But now I'm just disappointed.
I heard that bears lived to hunt and to fight.
Why are you wasting your time here, drinking whiskey?
Iorek: I stay because the people of this town gave me spirits, and let me drink till I was asleep.
Then they took my armour away.
And without my armour, I cannot go to war.
And I am an armoured bear.
War is the sea I swim in, the air I breathe.
Without my armour, I am nothing.
Lyra: But, can't you make new armour?
I thought bears were good at that.
There's all this metal around.
Iorek, smash the pipe: Worthless!
My armour is made of sky iron, from the falling stars that land in Svalbard.
A bear's armour is his soul, as your daemon is your soul.
Irreplaceable.
You may as well take him away and replace him with a doll.
Lyra: It must have been terrible to lose your armour.
Iorek: It was no less than I deserved.
I am an exile.
I was sent away from Svalbard because I was unworthy.
I fought another bear in single combat and was defeated.

Serafina: There's a prophesy about that child, Mr. Scoresby. She wil decide the war which is to come.
Mr. Scoresby: War? I ain't heard rumor of any war.
 Serafina: You will.
It is your war too, whether you know it or not.
Mr. Scoresby: What would quarrel be about?
Serafina: Nothing less than free will.
The Magisterium not only seeks to control everyone in this world, but every world in every universe.
They've been unable to extend their power until now.
But if Asriel finds a way to travel between worlds,
nothing will stop them from trying to take over.
Nothing but us, and that child.

ERAGON [2006]

Riders Wanted
Uncle Garrow: Your day will come too, Eragon.
And you will decide for yourself the kind of life you wish to lead.
Eragon: Uncle, I like my life right here.
Uncle Garrow: What many men seek is often right under their nose.
But for some, the unknown is too hard to resist.
Eragon: Is that why my mother left?
Uncle Garrow: My sister was in a great hurry when she left you here.
Wahtever her reasons, we can only trust they were for your own good.
Besides, had she not, I wouldn't have gained another son.

Eragon: You mocked the king in front of his soldiers.
Brom: I always say, better ask forgiveness than permission.

Brom: She was protecting you against the Ra'zac.
Eragon: I could have killed them.
Brom: That's the spirit.
One part brave, 3 parts fool.
Eragon: What, do you think I could do it?
Brom: The Ra'zac kill mercilessly. That's what they do.
 But a boy of 15, 16...
Eragon: 17.
Brom: 17, forgive me.
Well, I think even a 17-year-old boy might probably last a minute against Durza's assassins.
Eragon: Then I'll find Durza and kill him.
Brom: Durza's a Shade.
A sorcerer possessed with demonic spirits.
Find Durza, you'll be no better off than your uncle.
You just pray to heaven he doesn't find you because the king won't rest until he does.
You are the Varden's only hope.
Eragon: Who are the Varden?
Brom: Rebels. Outcasts.
Men who are brave or mad enough to oppose Galbatorix.

Saphira: And who might this be?
Eragon: This is Brom. He knows about dragons.
Saphira: He knows about dragons?
I'll be the judge of that. [roar]

You were chosen nevertheless.
A dragon will only hatch if it feels the presence of its rider.
It'll wait forever if it has to.
~Brom

Brom: Now it find you.
It will serve you and only you, and that's put your life in danger.
Eragon: Because it chose me?
Brom: No.
Because the easiest way for the king to destroy your dragon is to kill you.
A rider will live on if his dragon is killed.
But if the rider dies...
Saphira: So does his dragon.

Angela: A young life so tangled.
But you have been long awaited by many races.
Great battles rage around you.
Eragon: It can't be. I don't understand.
Eragon: You have powers you do not ackowledge, but there is a doom upon you.
Part of it lies in a death that rapidly approaches.
Eragon: It's already happened.
Angela: And a girl. She calls to you in your dreams.
She's part of your past and your future.

Magic comes from dragons.
It flows through the riders who command them.
~Brom

Before you cast a spell, you must learn the ancient language of the elves.
Brisingr means 'fire'. Is fire.
 The thing is the word.
Know the word and you control the thing.
Before you can cast a spell, you must have the physical strength to withstand its effect.
Some spells may leave you weakened.
Other spells, as you found out on the bridge, can leave you unconscious.
And yet other spells, if you use them before you're ready, will kill you.
I can teach you the words, but the limits of your strength you must learn for yourself.
 ~Brom

And now, the days of the riders have come again.
~Saphira

Take care of Saphira.
Without her, you'll find life is hardly worth living.
~Brom

Eragon: Why me?
Saphira: You choose a leader for his heart.
Eragon: But I'm not without fear.
Saphira: Without fear there cannot be courage.
But when we are together, it is our enemies who should be afraid.

Into the sky, to win or die!
~Eragon

You lost those who were dear to you.
You've paid the great price for your courage.
~Arya
